postheadericon How to Tune a Violin

Basically two methods: 1) for beginners, tune using the fine tuners and match each string to an external sound (electronic tuner, pitch pipe, piano or internet tuning site). 2) Tune your A-string using a tuning fork or one of the above – then use your ears to tune the D a perfect fifth down from the A, then tune the G using the D, and then go back up and tune the E string to the A. Second method gives a more precise tuning, but it takes time to develop the skill.—If you’re using fine tuners, they may get twisted all the way in, at some point. Ask your teacher to unscrew them and make the adjustment with the pegs and then you should be good for a few more weeks!

postheadericon Bouree by Handel, Suzuki Violin Book 2, slow play-through

Slow play-through (0:44) so you can play along while you’re learning the piece. Followed by quicker play-through at 3:41 for once you know the notes well. Play this by memory! You don’t really know your piece if you can’t play it by heart, and practicing with a video clip will help you get all the notes and bowings right. (Warning…… – I’m reading off a really old Suzuki edition, there might actually be one or two differences in bowing!!). Tune your violin up and have fun.
